Packing for your first surf lesson should not be stressful. Most people overthink it, and the good news is that we handle the hardest part. If you are wondering what to wear to a surf lesson, the short version is this: wear a swimsuit you trust, bring a towel and dry clothes, and leave the valuables at home.
Here is the full picture, including what goes under the wetsuit and rash guard we provide and what is better left in your car or hotel room.
What to Wear to a Surf Lesson: The Short Answer
Your lesson includes a foam top longboard, a wetsuit, a rash guard and sunblock. That means you do not need to buy or rent surf clothing before you show up. You only need to arrive wearing the right base layer.
Think of it as dressing for a day of swimming, with a little extra thought for movement. You will be paddling, lying on the board, popping up and getting knocked around by whitewater. Anything that stays put during all that is a good choice.
Your base layer
The simplest option is a swimsuit you already know stays in place when you swim. Good choices include:
- A one-piece swimsuit or a sporty two-piece with a secure fit
- Board shorts or snug swim trunks
- Athletic swim shorts without a loose, baggy leg
- A swim top or sports bra designed for water
Put it on at home before you leave. Changing on the beach is possible, but it is much easier to walk up already dressed.
Why fit matters more than style
A wetsuit goes on over your swimsuit, and the rash guard is a snug layer that helps with chafing on the board. Anything bulky, scratchy or loose can bunch up under those layers and get annoying fast. Choose something smooth and snug rather than fancy.

What We Provide So You Do Not Have To Buy Anything
It helps to know exactly what is covered, so you can skip the shopping trip.
- Surfboard: a foam top longboard, which is great for beginners
- Wetsuit: sized to you at the lesson
- Rash guard: an extra layer for comfort on the board
- Sunblock: applied before you head to the water
Our coaches will help you get the wetsuit and rash guard on and check that everything fits comfortably before the lesson moves forward. If something feels off, say so. It is much easier to fix on the sand than in the water.
Every 90-minute lesson includes your gear
- Foam top longboard
- Wetsuit
- Rash guard
- Sunblock
What to Wear Under the Wetsuit and Rash Guard
This is where most of the questions come from, so let's get specific.
For adults and teens
Stick with swimwear. Regular cotton underwear, cotton shorts and cotton t-shirts soak up water, stay heavy and feel cold and clammy once you are out there. They can also rub in uncomfortable places. Quick-drying swim fabric is a better match for the ocean.
If you prefer more coverage, a snug athletic swim bottom under the wetsuit is a good option. Just avoid anything with hard buckles, zippers or metal that could dig into you when you lie on the board.
For kids
Lessons are open to students from age 5 and up, and for younger surfers the same rule applies: a swimsuit they already swim in comfortably. Have them put it on before you leave home. Pack a full change of dry clothes for after, because kids tend to come out of the water hungry, sandy and ready to be warm.
If you are booking for a family, our semi-private surf lessons are set up for small groups of 2 to 3 people, which can be a comfortable way to learn together. You can also look at the private surf lessons page if you want one student working one-on-one with a coach.

What to Leave at Home
The ocean does not care how much something cost. Anything you bring into the water can get lost, so keep it simple.
- Jewelry: rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings can snag or slip off
- Watches and fitness trackers: they can get scratched, and the board and wetsuit are not kind to them
- Phone, keys and wallet: leave them locked in your car or at your hotel when you can
- Loose clothing for the water: baggy shorts, cotton tees and sweatshirts do not belong in the surf
- Sunglasses and hats without a strap: they will end up in the ocean
- Cash and cards you do not need: bring only what you plan to use after the lesson
If you wear glasses or contacts, plan ahead for how you will see in the water, and ask your coach any questions before the lesson starts. It is a good thing to mention early.
What to Bring to the Sand
There is a short list of things worth having with you, even though they stay on the beach during your hour in the water.
- A towel for drying off
- A full set of dry clothes to change into afterward
- Sandals or flip-flops for the walk back
- A water bottle so you can rehydrate
- A hair tie if your hair is long
- A plastic bag for wet swimwear and the wet towel
If you have a sunscreen you already like for sensitive skin, you can bring it along. Our included sunblock gets you covered either way.
Timing counts too
Your lesson is 90 minutes: 30 minutes of land instruction followed by one full hour in the water. Plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start time. Arriving more than 10 minutes late counts as a no-show, so give yourself room for parking and walking down to the sand. Showing up already dressed helps a lot with that.

Beach Notes: A Pacific Beach Example
Where you surf can affect how you pack. At Pacific Beach, the meeting point is on the beach in front of the Wayfarer Hotel, 707 Pacific Beach Drive, San Diego CA 92109. There is a 3-mile boardwalk along the ocean with restaurants and shopping close by, so it is easy to grab a bite after your session. Wear your swimsuit, bring a dry outfit, and you are set. You can book a Pacific Beach lesson directly, or read more on the Pacific Beach lessons page.
If you would rather compare spots first, we also teach at Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and La Jolla. The clothing advice is the same at all of them.
